Hero

Hero
                                                  (For Mike )

I needed a hero
the day you went.
Someone to believe in,
someone sent.

Actions figures
need not apply.
No x-ray vision,
no ability to fly.

An everyday hero
I had to see.
Someone unshackled,
someone free.

Hero was not
the title you sought.
something to be
purchased or bought.

Life showed
the hero you became.
Questions you asked
came back the same

Weak from the cancer
you continued to fight.
Unwilling to go softly
into the night.

Quiet dignity
til the day you left.
Not giving in,
not feeling bereft.

Eternity called,
as it will do.
You knew the one
who was calling you.

You made your way
to the eastern shore.
Across the sea
you knew there's more.

Back you looked
as men will do.
Some regrets,
but you stayed true.

You made your peace,
another journey began.
Finally reaching
your promised land.

Down here
where mortals reside.
I stood at the shore
and watched the tide.

A hero lived here,
now he is gone.
A hero died
singing his song.
