Her Son

He was warm as sunshine
She held him to her breast
He was her baby boy
She was perfectly blessed

He was her little boy
The joy of her heart
Her deep love for him
Never would depart

He was her teenage son
She had watched him grow
She hoped he understood
She truly loved him so

He grew into a man
In the Army he did serve
Giving them his all
He met each day with verve

Then came the dreaded day
The news broke her heart
How would she survive
She quickly fell apart

The day of his funeral
She prepared to say good-bye
Her heart in such turmoil
She could no longer cry

She looked in the casket
Where her son was placed
Another young life gone
By war it was erased

Serving his country
In battle he was slain
Through tears she wondered
Had he died in vain

As her heart was breaking
She touched his pallid cheek
No warmth did she feel
She let out a mournful shriek

Fighting for his country
He paid a heavy price
Now asleep in death
He's as cold as ice

So many have fallen this way... There are no winners in war
