Her Secret Is His

He said he would keep my secret
but he spilled it on my grave,
he told me to live without regret
but he could not take advice he gave.

For thirty years he made me feel guilt
through the kindness that he showed,
the flower of love could only wilt
in coldness of the vault I owed.

The secret died in childbirth
so only I could grieve
as I put my secret in the earth
and marked it with a breve.

I did not care he would feel pain
when I composed myself to sleep,
the question why would be his bane
for promises he did not keep.
