HEARTBROKEN TO THIS DAY
I thought the yearning had ended;
That I had finally moved on.
All the memories had faded,
In those long months since you had gone.
Those dreams had become less frequent,
That had invaded my sleep at night.
Your photograph was in a drawer,
Always kept safely out of sight.
But here, in the department store,
I was back there under your spell,
As I passed the perfume counter
And caught just a hint of Chanel.
I turned, thinking to see you there,
With your beautiful golden hair,
Smiling the way you used to do
But, of course, there was no-one there.
I thought the yearning had ended
And I’d worked through all of the pain.
But just one whiff of your perfume
Has brought all of it back again.
