Have you seen my daughter

Who is that rowing a boat on the pond?
I looked past my friend and cousin, John
It’s not a who, it’s a what, I think an otter.
He got closer and yelled “have you seen my daughter?”

We were surprised, because where had he learned to speak?
“I am not sure,” I told him. My voice came out as a little squeak.
“If you see her, tell her she’s grounded,” he said.
Then he waved and headed down river past the cattail bed.
