Happy Place
In my happy place your heart still beats
And I can wrap my arms around you
We can laugh like kids, 14 again
Telling dumb jokes and breaking rules
On concrete under skatepark sunsets
With a half-broken speaker and junk food
We sing and dance, free from fear or stress
And we don’t go home when we’re supposed to
I get to see you every morning still
And call you when I’m upset
You’ll ask me “who do I have to kill?”
I’ll smile then shortly forget
I had a dream I saw you once more
On the bleachers with our friends
I broke down crying, sobbed “I’m so sorry”
And you just took my hand
You held it tight, said “it’s alright
I love you and it’s not your fault”
I clung to you with all my might
Knowing it’s the last time we’d talk
In my happy place your heart still beats
And we never say goodbye
I get to tell you everything I didn’t then
Like I love you and I’m by your side
