Growing Up

“I would never speak to someone like that” But in my mind it’s definitely spat, “I could never be so mean, so heartless” As I’ve walked by those with far less. “I care about the broken and neglected” While I know I’ve had them rejected and ejected. “I shall speak only truth, no lie will come from me!” And the heat turned up, so a “mistruth” was spoke into being. “I will be a shelter for all, ask nothing in return for the shade from this tree.” But something boils up: what is this greed that I’m seeing? For all the times I held back when I was taunted, A thousand more trail behind, and I am haunted. For all the things I’ve fronted and flaunted… Becoming me is the last thing I ever wanted.
