Grandparents

My grandparents were in my life
Through all my childhood days.
It wasn’t ‘til my 30’s
That we sadly parted ways.

Yet did they really know me?
They adored me and were proud,
Though the time we spent together
Mostly happened in a crowd.

Our visits came with aunts and uncles,
Cousins, meals and such,
But as to one on one time,
Well, there wasn’t very much.

Today, though, things are different;
Expectations are, as well.
We still adore our grandkids
And, of course, we also kvell.*

Still, I try, but can’t imagine
How my grandparents would fare
Doing what we do, because the difference
Is beyond compare.

Your poem touched my heart as I only had a step step grandmother and my parents had little contact with him or grandpa. I really feel i missed out so much when I was growing up and envied friends who had close relationships with their grandparents. hugs jan xx

Dear Ilene, What a joyful and introspective poem on grandparents. I am now a grandparent and enjoy every minute with them. I think that they also enjoy every minute with me. I am their play toy because I sing, read, play on the floor, feed, and on and on. Thanks for your enlightening words to spend more one-on-one time. - Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Closer knit families would have more one to one contact but in larger families many would just be faces in the crowd. Tom

Yes, the size of families influences how well members get to know each other. Well written and thoughtful. Janice

Yes, you're right, Ilene. Especially in larger families.
