Notes About The Poem
In honour and memory of a wonderful Grandad. [R.I.P. 29-08-1944 ~ 14-05-2025]

Grandad

There's much to be said about the value
Of a person we choose to remember.
They touch our lives in many ways,
Be it stranger, friend or family member.

My Grandad is such a man.
Though he passed a year ago.
He epitomised "one of a kind"
Needless to say, I miss him so.

Grandads heart would bleed for those
Who were facing stressful events.
He would look for ways to cheer them up
With cards, quips and presents.

His determination knew no bounds
Unfettered by disability.
To deny pain permission to stand in his way
Was his super capability!

He often said "You can convince
Yourself that you are ill.
But much of it can be overcome."
It was by his viking spirited will.

He lived on thirty six years more
Than predicted by medical staff.
His cardiologist called him the "alpha male"
And this memory often made him laugh.

His practicality was second to none.
He could make any advance.
He made toys for children, a porch for the house
Boxes and trellises for the plants.

He transformed the garden in to
A floral paradise and peaceful place.
Seeing the creatures enjoy and explore it
Lifted his spirits and lit up his face.

In the cold dark depths of winter
To lift and warm our soul
He'd spend hours at a time in the kitchen
Preparing his special casserole.

Everything he gave to others
Stemmed from empathy and love.
He put in more consideration
Than the average person would think of.

It was my honour and my privilege
To be there with him to the end.
A precious treasure locked in my heart.
My Grandfather. My Friend.

That is such a nice heartfelt tribute to your grandfather, who sounds like quite a guy! Well done! He must have really lived well to receive such a tribute.

Thanks David. He was a wonderful man. He always taught me to reason on things before reacting. He could adapt things to use if the tools he needed werent available. He poured a lot of his feelings into the consideration of other people and this is what moved him to want to help or cheer people up. Strong inside and out. Gave the best hugs. I really was so blessed to have a grandad like him. :-D miss him very much :(
