Good Night Prayer

"Now I lay me down to sleep,"
was not my childhood prayer.
I prayed that they would leave me be,
the ghosts and spirits there.

Now that I am old and sick,
I ponder my mistakes,
and now my prayer's a simpler one:
I pray that I won't wake.
