Gone From Me
My arms can’t reach far enough to hold you,
My eyes can’t see through the divide between us,
All the clichés they said turned out to be true,
You’ve gone from flesh and blood to dust from dust,
I couldn’t bring myself to say goodbye,
Or face the fact that you were leaving,
Holding back the truth denied,
That my breaking heart would soon be grieving,
I never gazed knowingly into your eyes,
To comfort you when the end was near,
I left you on your own to ask why,
To confront your loss and pain and fear,
I didn’t take the chance to say I love you,
For the very last time,
Yet I knew if only for a little while,
Would you still be mine,
I’m sorry for every little thing,
I ever said or did to hurt you,
For all the kindness life can bring,
There’s cruelty too late to undo,
Now I mourn your death,
I mourn my loss,
For all the times that will never be,
Forever you are gone from me.
