Notes About The Poem

I tried something different with this poem.  Does it work?

Going to School

Going to School
Kevin Davis 2023

I. Beginnings
When I was young and carefree still, with home my gentle, sheltered place,
My parents spoke of school with smiles, of wonders I would soon embrace.
I clung to safety, hesitant, unsure of worlds beyond my door,
Until my siblings whispered hope—“Just try it once, then try some more.”

II. First Steps
So hand in hand with Mom I walked into a world both bright and new,
Where books and toys and laughing friends came tumbling into view.
The strangeness softened into warmth; my fears began to drift away,
And in that tender, trembling start, I found a reason there to stay.

III. Awakening
Days turned to weeks, and learning bloomed like petals opening in the sun.
Questions fluttered from my mind; discovery had just begun.
The hours danced in gentle rhythm—school and home in sweet divide—
And all the while, without my knowing, something blossomed deep inside.

IV. Lessons and Companions
I learned to read, to write, to dream, to chase the thoughts that sparked my mind.
Through whispered plans and shared ideas, I learned to listen and be kind.
My teacher guided every step; each subject shimmered, fresh and bright.
We worked through morning’s steady glow, then played beneath the fading light.

V. Adventures
Field trips carried us to places where imagination loved to roam,
And recess filled our afternoons with games that felt like worlds of their own.
Stories gathered in my thoughts, wild landscapes only I could see—
A once home-bound child now building realms of possibility.

VI. Becoming
The year returned me back to home, where days still looked the same at first,
Yet something in me felt renewed, a quiet, growing, inner thirst.
At six years old, I saw the sky with colors I had never known,
And even climbing trees became a search for truths I’d newly grown.

VII. Reflection
Now looking back across the years, those early days still warm my smile—
Small moments shaping who I am, each step a part of my long mile.
The classroom was a second home, a place where seeds of caring grew,
Teaching me to walk the world with open heart and open view.
