God Loves Me

GOD LOVES ME!

“God so loved the world,” I read, and had it memorized,
But it was many days before I finally realized
That though “the world” means everyone, it means that God loves
ME—
And if I’d been the ONLY ONE, there’d still be Calvary.
“God loves me” took new meaning then, afresh within my heart,
And on that day my life was changed to ne’er from that depart.
He loved me though He knew each thing that I had ever done:
The sin, the scars it left on me, rejecting His dear Son.
He loved me so that He went through all of His life on earth
A pauper, without proper place to even have His birth.
He loved me as He walked the shores of the Sea of Galilee
And faced rejection by His own and the blinded Pharisees.
He loved me as He looked upon the sick, the blind, the lame,
The ones possessed with demons healed by the power of His name.
He loved me as He faced the cup in the garden there that day,
And He looked up, said, “Not My will, but Thine be done, I pray.”
He loved me as the whip came down upon His back and side,
With outstretched hands nailed to a cross and as He bled and died.
He loved me so much He came forth to win the victory
From death and hell and all its curse where I deserved to be.
He loved me on that day I came, with life ruined by sin;
He didn’t even hesitate when I asked Him to come in.
He loves me yet today though I am still so weak and frail;
He loves me when I slip and fall and though I often fail.
YES! GOD LOVES ME—it’s hard to say those words and then not cry
To think He gave His sacred life for such a worm as I!
“GOD LOVES ME”—let it now sink in the depths of my poor soul—
That He would save a wretch like me and make me clean and whole!
And give to me eternal life, a mansion, streets of gold—
“GOD LOVES ME”—oh, I pray I’ll not let the story e’er get old!
