God How I loved You

The taste of apples on your lips,
A sweetness lingering after rain,
It seemed the orchard leaned to us,
Breathing its fragrance through the dusk.

The scent of water in your hair,
Cool rivers winding out of night,
I bent my face against the flow,
And dreamed of stars dissolved in waves.

The sky and moon were one that hour,
A silver chalice held above,
And in its light I felt your hand,
A gentle pulse of living flame.

It gave me joy to paint your toes,
Like petals touched with secret dew,
And when you smiled, the world grew still,
A hush as tender as a prayer.

Your slender fingers, roaming slow,
Awoke the music in my heart,
And all my silence turned to song,
A song that trembled only for you.

But shadows entered where we dwelt,
They came by night, they came unasked,
And what was whole was broken down,
A flower scattered on the wind.

Now bushes bow without their leaves,
The trees are mourners by the lane,
And where the blossoms once were fair,
There lies the emptiness of frost.

Yet still my daughter’s eyes are bright,
She carries echoes of your grace,
Her laughter is a stream that runs,
Though winter chills the silent ground.

And on the shore the waters break,
Their silver foam against the stone,
I whisper into the falling tide,
God, how I loved you—
And love you still, though you are gone.
