Notes About The Poem

I knew my father was special when I was young, but did not fully appreciate who he was.

God Blessed Me With a Father

God Blessed Me with a Father

God blessed me with a father. He's been gone for quite a while.
I still have great memories; most which make me smile.
He never downed another for anything they might believe,
Gave of himself to others, better to give than to receive

As a religious, moral man, no one could better be.
Every day our church doors opened we were there for all to see.
He could have been a preacher, but the calling wasn't there.
He participated otherwise to show the Lord he cared.

He believed that he was guided, by the hand of God was led
Said a prayer, of thanks, at every meal and before he went to bed
They were not long or asking prayers, but simple and direct,
To let the Lord know he was thankful and he wanted to connect.

As I look back and reminisce, think of the man who now is me,
I see my father often, he was the man I strive to be.
I pray, when my life's over, that someone left will say,
He's gone but not forgotten, I try to live my life his way
