Girls Picking Oysters

GIRLS    PICKING   OYSTERS

In the rocky shallows picking shells, daughter
And mother between rapid tides brief.
Shells that look like rocks on the oyster reef,
Craggy rocky creatures of the salt water.

Mother, her long dress tucked up with strings,
Wild hair across strand. Child’s bare feet on sand,
She washes the shells in her shy delicate hand -
Making the water’s small ripples - and sings.

Contented is her song this windless, sunny morn.
They will trek home and savour their catch:
Mother will cook and daughter will watch;
And the empty shells their warm room will adorn.

What a delightful way for a mother and daughter to spend the day, Syd! I would like to join them. Snorkling for scallops is a lot of fun too, but it takes hours to take the seafood out of the shells. You painted a lovely picture! I'll be sending you a Soup mail shortly pertaining to your blog. Love, Carolyn
