Notes About The Poem

Ghosts

Oh, for the love of God...
      Why must you always stay
 Tethered to me? Sever your strings.

     You keep creeping behind me;
   Continually tugging at my sleeve.
       When will you leave me be?

     I keep trying to forget wrongs
    I never made right, but no dice!
       I keep trying to make peace...

         With missed opportunities;
    I still lie in bed with choices I wish,
I had made, mistakes, painful memories...

   Of the past, but much like a magnet,
            You insist on pulling me
        Back to you, again and again.

              You incessantly stir
The glowing embers to reignite the fire
       I keep struggling to smother.

           Quit circling above me
         With your saturnine wings
      I loathe your brooding shadow.

 Set me free, ghosts! Don't saddle me
       With your unwieldy albatross.
         Release your stranglehold...

              So I can breathe
            And fly, at long last.
       Please, haunt me no more!
