Why must you always stay
Tethered to me?
You keep creeping behind me
Continually tugging at my sleeve
When will you leave me be, at last?
I try to forget wrongs I never made right
I try to make peace
With missed opportunities
Choices I wish I made, mistakes
Painful memories of the past
But like a magnet, you keep pulling me
Back to you. You incessantly stir
The glowing embers to reignite
The fire I keep struggling to smother
Quit circling above me
With your saturnine wings
I loathe your shadow. Don't saddle me
With your unwieldy albatross
Release your stranglehold
So I can breathe, and fly...
