Ghetto Summer Ii

Careening around corners to dodge
bullets that flew to lodge
in an innocents' side
on the sidewalk he died
walking home from school
when some strung-out fool
started shooting.

Smells drift from ribs of beef
out into traffic beneath
the el above on a track.
Street life where a wise crack
gets a wink and a nod
while out of the air comes a rod
blowing a baby down.

Trash and dash or wine and dine
its no matter on this street sublime
as sweet soul music pours
from funky jazz club doors
and children laugh outside at play
until the shooting that day.

He lay so long in that pool
of blood as caterwaul cruel
rose from a mothers' rage cried out
down the street with a shout,
the great primal scream
will echo forever in her dreams.

I can definitely relate to this one. So many children don't deserve a ghetto summer! Great write!

The story unfolding keeps the reader on the edge....like watching a movie, and knowing that the ending will be forever haunting....amazing writing, Sue! ~ Carrie

am feeling every line of this fine write! Sue, an emotional issue, with no easy solutions.... desperation, addiction, poverty, access to quality education, corruption, racism, prison, unemployment, lack of loving role-models, and many other words describe the complicated conditions that lead to these tragedies....jim

Chilling! Unfortunately, this is a scene that plays out all too often in our cities, where innocents are the victims. Surely, the devastated mother's "primal scream" will echo time and time again until this madness ends. You really set the mood and made the reader feel like we were there watching this unfold. Excellent write, Sue. Love, Carolyn
