Future Paths

I trudge in wake of winter’s bane
And make my slow and weary way,
When suddenly I notice plain
A darkened road amid the day:

A winding wooded forest path
Reveals a gaping hole in time
Where distant shadows of the past
And future phantoms now collide

Beyond it lies a lofty hill –
A solemn beacon climbing high;
A guard of life, so deadly still;
With ease, it buffers ground and sky

Above the trees – an amber glow:
Secluded warmth more felt than seen –
A loyal friend obscured by snow,
Now doomed to burn in memory

If I can pass this way, I will,
Across the path and over hill,
But I must journey on today,
For fear my fragile life will fade.
