Here's a fun Poetry Marathon poem inspired by Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss (1904-1991) and his famous children’s poem, "Green Eggs and Ham.” I originally published this in my 'Mile 20 Closed and Being Judged' blog post on 10/05/2025.

Each of my Marathon tribute poems is a transformative homage to a literary classic — much like a parody or pastiche. I always credit the original poet and work, and the new poem stands as a creative reinterpretation with its own theme, imagery, and tone.

I have included my Marathon-themed poetry in my Poetry Marathon blog posts since 2019, usually at the end of the blog posts, but I never posted them to my poetry page. So now I'm taking the time to post them to my poetry page.

I am Marathon man
Marathon man I am
 
Do you like
Dirt roads of sand?
 
I do not like them, 
Marathon man
I do not like dirt roads of sand
 
Would you prefer them 
At the start or end?
 
I would not like them
At the start or end
I would not like them
Anywhere, my friend
I do not like
Dirt roads of sand
I do not like them,
Marathon man
 
Mixed-surface races
Save your feet
Much better than 
The hard, paved street
I recommend 
Dirt roads of sand
Try them! Try them!
I am Marathon man
 
Marathon man, If you let me be
I will try them, yessiree!
 
(… and he tries them …) 
 
Say! Dirt roads of sand 
Do help my feet
Much better than
