From Bard To Verse
Whether April is sweet or full of harsh travails
It kindly gave birth to our Canterbury Tales
Much later came The Wasteland with different voices,
A fractured piece in which the whole world rejoices.
In Shakespeare we see the Colossus of drama
A genre in which he perfected the grammar.
Just judge his variety of play
The master of all he did survey.
Sharp were the phrases with which Bacon did play
His subjects sculpted in every essay
Rich as a river in spate wrote Lamb
His roast pig showed that he was no ham.
In Wordsworth we revere the poet romantic
While Arnold is ever the epic pedantic
On daffodils William is so handsome
As Matthew ground out Sohrab And Rustum
What of Dickens?Could we dare to say more
With his rich feast of characters galore
Whereas Joyce's magnum opus Ulysses
Richly released his literary juices
Let us not forget Lear so chimeric
He so fond of a witty limerick
With words he so much loved to have fun
Laughter for each and everyone.
So many more deserve a mention
Milton,Burns and Alfred Lord Tennyson
Shelley,Keats and Coleridge too
All favourites who deserve their due.
So whether we go from bard to verse
Our writers we oft fondly rehearse
Our nation's genius so much resembles the rose
We must not forget our proud poetry and prose.
