Friendship
Friendship?
Facebook 'friends' and 'likes' abound
Like pebbles strewn on stony ground
A passing fad or here to last?
Of recent days or years long past.
Does friendship live so short a while
Reflected in a hazy smile?
They come and go, or so it seems,
Alive or dead in living dreams
Their numbers drop, so few remain,
All lost in time you can't reclaim.
Lots of banter, snapchat, twitter,
Can make you cross or even titter
Yet true friends seem to be so few
Those now gone, the ones you knew.
Friendship is the strangest name
But 'knowing' isn't quite the same
It's just a skin, perhaps a crust,
So thin for someone you must trust.
Their numbers grow, more names to add
But would their passing make you sad?
Phones in hand they sit, or walk,
Contacting 'friends' though not through talk,
Fingers flashing, faces set,
Caress a silent alphabet.
Comments passed by word of hand
Across the world, in every land,
Feelings posted shared by all
Though if they met they can't recall.
Likes and faces grow each day
But will their memory fade away?
So here I sit while 'friendships' pass,
A different school, a different class,
Landscapes seen and moments shared,
Hands on hearts or running scared.
Hold on tight lest you forget
Those shades of life in concrete set,
So live those moments from the past
Until the final die is cast.
True friendship lives and spans the years,
It never wanes or disappears.
