Freedom

In solitude I dream tonight And watch a moth in fevered flight. It’s drawn toward my quaint porch light And flies consumed with all its might. Through open window I can see Its desperation shared with me; How freedom in this world is light— And we as souls are drawn to fight. Though freedom’s light may cause our death, It’s worth the risk with every breath. I understand the moth’s sad plight When drawn to the glorious light. Though it knows not of human trust, It buzzes on because it must! © Connie Marcum Wong

Freedom is worth the risk, because our spirits would certainly die without it... This great poem truly deserves to be on the winner's list. Congratulations to you, Connie!

Your gift for making magnificent poetry from commonplace things calls to mind Emily Dickinson's poetry. That very thing happened as I read "Freedom." You have a gift of soaring beauty. I could not be more sincere. Thanks for sharing it.

Dear Connie, I couldn't help but think of our approaching Veterans Day when I read: "Though freedom’s light may cause our death, It’s worth the risk with every breath." You made a very profound statement in this poem, especially in the last couplet. Sending winning wishes to you. Love, Carolyn

It is said that luck favours the brave. With this encouraging thought in mind we can surge ahead towards the light, such as the moth does. There will surely be stumbling blocks along the way, and dangers too, but if we don't try we will achieve nothing! Thank you for sharing this inspirational poem, Connie! // paul

Poor moths! I used to see them gatherings around lights in the country. I don't think there is a comic book character called "Moth Man" but I think there should be! Peace & Love Matthew Anish

Light always remains the main inspiration of every sensitive human being and making it a symbol of Freedom can be a great inspiration for those, who are fighting for freedom from different types of bondages still in many parts of this Earth. Great write dear friend. My good wishes for its grand win in the contest & thank you once again for our precious words on my Fusion Song.Love & best wishes always.Ravindra K Kapoor

Wow, very interesting Connie! Your comparison between a moth heading towards the light and freedom is very original. Your poem somewhat reminded me of a quote I heard today: everybody has two choices; to either step forward into growth or backward into safety. Freedom is a lot like that... maybe not the safest route, but it's the only one worth fighting for.

This is an awesome poem . . . moth and freedom -- your connection works for both are drawn to the light -- very clever. The lines are tight and rhyming pattern concise. I will go on record -- this is a winner! All the best.
