Free Ivor's Verse

I'd like to write a poem but I must not let it rhyme So those that favour free verse can cherish every line. Suspend my natural writing and try to put it down In the fashion of those poets whose work can make me frown. I'm really, really trying and the words I'll try to fit Into my little poem so in comfort they don' sit. So why am I just finding that in every single line It ends up like I'm thinking and has to flipping rhyme! I put my pen to paper with serious intent Of making perfect poetry the way that it was meant To forget the rhyme and rhythm and try to please the folk Who claim that rhyming poets are just a blinking joke. But my pen, it will not let me and I fear it's in my head That from mind to pen and paper that the way the ink is bled Is to flow out very smoothly and I have no say in this, As my muse insists that free verse is the poetry I should miss. Now I am not saying that free verse has no place for all of you But I know it is now never a style that I will do. For this particular type of poetry I will never understand And although I tried to write it, it just wouldn't leave my hand. Please excuse this rhyming poet for his failure to find Any beauty in a poem where the lines don't please his mind. I am sure in one man's poison another man will find Pure beauty in the ramblings of a very different kind! Ivor G Davies

Ivor you know how we all encouraged Sami and I almost fell out when he sent me a Soup Mail...said he came back to write again because he finally met someone he cares for. Just type his name in at the top of Poetry Soup Sami Helbaoui He's trying and that's all that's important. I also heard from VeeBdosa ..again almost fell out ....wow

We should try to get them all over here. I never thought I would say that 4 years ago!

Ivor....I failed to say your poem was terrific ...with that said...our humor here is quite different than the Brits...though I love both...Never mind the hate just take care of your family and be the good guy I know you to be...there is another world, the one that counts...Let us Lighten Up...and enjoy the pleasures that we have...Oh and do you remember Sami from Lit? He's back on soup....I am thrilled...Little Sami

I've looked for Sami but failed, can you give me a link to his work. I remember my poem 'Moving Home' was written as an example for him....Ivor

I thought the light banter that this poem created was in fact a sign of cross-pool humour! I do miss the light hearted poetry threads that Lit supported, though they haven't been around for years. Now if we ever get Eric back on soup people really might take his sense of humour wrong!

So Ivor did you hear the news? They are offering 50,000 American Dollars for the best free verse poem. The free verse must tell, "Why I hate rhyming Poetry" Give your muse a scotch and soda.

While I apologise for my personal failings others are actually bribing people to stir up hate? Maybe in my striving to make my personality as public as my poetry I have again chosen the unpopular path?

We all have our personal taste in poetry. Personally I prefer rhyme to free verse unless the free verse has a smooth flow and understandable meaning to it. Rhyme comes easy to me but I also like the short form syllabic poems. Didn't mean to ramble. I enjoy your poetry, Ivor. Love, Kim

Kim, Although I am blind to most free verse I do know a couple of free verse poets whose work is excellent, I only enjoy any poetry when the poem carries itself with tempo and flow and on reading it I do not notice if it rhymes or not. I also write a bit of haiku and other styles which are purely based on meaning... thanks for accepting my poem in the spirit it was written.
