Free Ivor's Verse
I'd like to write a poem but I must not let it rhyme
So those that favour free verse can cherish every line.
Suspend my natural writing and try to put it down
In the fashion of those poets whose work can make me frown.
I'm really, really trying and the words I'll try to fit
Into my little poem so in comfort they don' sit.
So why am I just finding that in every single line
It ends up like I'm thinking and has to flipping rhyme!
I put my pen to paper with serious intent
Of making perfect poetry the way that it was meant
To forget the rhyme and rhythm and try to please the folk
Who claim that rhyming poets are just a blinking joke.
But my pen, it will not let me and I fear it's in my head
That from mind to pen and paper that the way the ink is bled
Is to flow out very smoothly and I have no say in this,
As my muse insists that free verse is the poetry I should miss.
Now I am not saying that free verse has no place for all of you
But I know it is now never a style that I will do.
For this particular type of poetry I will never understand
And although I tried to write it, it just wouldn't leave my hand.
Please excuse this rhyming poet for his failure to find
Any beauty in a poem where the lines don't please his mind.
I am sure in one man's poison another man will find
Pure beauty in the ramblings of a very different kind!
