Brutal beatings
I've been dealt
A child screams
The ice cream melts;
Cuts and bruises
From head to toe
Muffled whimpers
As she shovels snow;
Unbridled laughter
He hides in shame
Praying to God
They won't remember my name;
Kicks and punches
Thrown in fear
Under the covers
He hides his tears;
The childhood friend
Died in my arms
Life itself
Has lost all of its charm;
Opening up
To God and man
Freeing myself
As best as I can.
