I saw the world change in a week It’s that slant of the sun that tells me Backlighting in gold tones The way the light edges, rather than directs Comes at you sideways like many things in life Blinding one eye, warming only the side exposed The other side relinquishes a shiver Trees turn to poles laid out to follow Pointing the way Leaves flickering light, broadcast the nearness of change I follow the poles and become found in the shadows
