For the Years of Tomorrow

She counted the candles
with the arithmetic of an ancient angel,
the impertinent years of her life fuelled the flames slowly
patiently, and prettily,
a flicker for the fast joys, a standstill for the sorrows,
she knew very well how age brought trials, tears, and triumphs,
and she believed in life after death
as a dove believes in the upcoming morning,
to the field of birthday fire
she blew a blissfully blue breath
the lights waved and vanished like startled wraiths,
yet there was one stubborn candle
that seemed to glow upon her quiet heart
revealing with a direct warmness...
You either live inspired, or you die -

We can't always choose our battles, I do believe a person's onus is much determined in how he/she handles adversity, that's a true test of aspired integrity, or not.

Wow, what a lovely verse here, Justin. So heartfelt and original. I love the stubborn candle that resides in her heart. "she blew a blissfully blue breath the lights waved and vanished like startled wraiths" Such pretty imagery.. so nice...atmospheric and heartwarming. Cool line - "with the arithmetic of an ancient angel.." Quiet hearts certainly speak more than they utter. Always, Laura
