For Jess

the splintered glass
of endless tears
the rending
of my life's garment
a rug pulled
from underneath
and
no air, no breath,
no sweetness
could satisfy
the absence
of your laughter
once more
I'm expected to say
goodbye
too soon, too unfairly
yet your friendship
was worth this aching price
