For Al

Sometimes my silence is deeper
Than any communication I make
About that flame of which I am keeper
You are the standard that I take
Through doors and up the steep stair
I climb. I emulate you, the hero
Of my pain and joy, the silent care
Pent up in me to bring without error
My gifts for you. I love you, Amos
From the first time you lifted me
Shoulder high through crowd and dust
And carried me to our father's knee
Scented with tiger-balm. I laugh
Still about the prayer you gave me
Not knowing it yourself. Lights off,
I listened for yoursteps in the dark
And the ice-cream at midnight so
That I would not speak of the lark
That sings for your heart. I owe
All the shape of my manhood to you
There are many brothers, few like
You. The young father so far now
My heart for you keeps a silent vow.
