Flattery's Sweet Sway

As time blemishes your youthful skin,
wrinkles appear, and crowfeet begin.
And your fragile ego fuels fears
lamenting the ravages of the years.
Wooing dreams of perpetual youth,
you despise the grim mirror of truth.
And as tears fall from your eyes in drips,
they taste bitter upon aging lips.
Addicted to flattery's sweet sway,
you use makeup to brush time away.
And thrive under that coating of lies,
contorting truth till its value dies.
Mascara completes the fantasy,
eyes blinded by conceit can not see.
And while you're pretending all is good,
fear hides a tear; time's misunderstood.
Stepping into the light from the dark,
you pay the price as tears leave their mark.
And although you disguise how you feel,
reality reflects what is real.
