First Sight
Yes, it’s a fact, at love’s first dawning
I was smitten by the beauty of you.
It made in me a desperately wanting
Before a thing about you I found true.
I can confess it now, say it straight out
I was consumed by your bodily being.
In that mystic moment I had no doubt
That all else could await my perceiving.
My mind raised sobering objections
Certain I had forsaken my senses.
But my heart had its own reflections
And deployed soul-deep defenses.
The yield of the years makes clear
Your beauty came from down deep.
Eyes and heart found what was dear—
A love that we would forever keep.
