First Days of School

First Days of School
Kevin Davis 2024

School became a focus for my life when I was a very young, carefree child,
Content to stay home, but parents' encouragements and promise of fun beguiled.
I was not easily convinced that leaving home and safety was really for me,
My older siblings, who had already begun, encouraged me to try it and see.

The first day, I left with Mom, into a strange new world was supposedly fun,
There, on that first day, I found friends, snacks, books, and toys under the sun.
And as days became weeks, I started to learn things that eased my anxiety,
Making me ready to go back and discover more things in my new society.

Each day brought lessons and games to play, and fun became a word in my life.
I began to ask questions, seek answers, and explore with eagerness.
As weeks became months, the hours seemed so small; together we developed a flow,
My life was filled with school and with home, and I hardly saw how much I did grow.

I learned to read, to write, to solve problems, and chase every dream,
With each new skill, by talking with others, I learned to scheme.
The teacher is a guide, each subject a wonder, each new friend a delight,
We worked through the day, with time to play, before the day turned to night.

There were field trips, then recess for games once thought wild,
I built many stories in the mind of this once home-bound child.
From pencils and papers, I found many dreams and new goals,
The essence of school was etched deeply into my soul.

The year ended with time back home, much remained the same, time to play.
I somehow matured into a boy of six, seeing rainbows and clouds to fill my day.
I looked for things learned, new things to see, even while climbing a tree,
Now my friends and I, learning as well, saw adventures in all we could see.

Looking back from the distance of time, those days always bring a smile,
Happy days and the years that followed, molding and shaping my life's mile.
The classroom was a place to enhance the learning in my home.
To teach the social part of caring for others wherever I did roam.
