Listen to poem:
Wandering around the earth saying you love me? What do you know of love.., If I thought you knew anything of love I would've stayed.. yes, there beside you in that little house, in that little bed. Not just locked away inside that thick head. (I can't tell her she is only a figment) Well., easy enough to talk to a shadow, you cast one too. Change the radio station to your oldies, but don't see me, don't even listen. Remember that day you walked me to my Psych 101 class? You didn't even try, you didn't reach for my hand, and now I don't care. (I can't tell her she is only a figment) There are codes in all of life, I built mine around them. To get past my past, trying to tell you it. I was in mortal combat with depression. You never knew how dark those days could get. Always smiling; handing me a crummy flower. You never had any codes, no morals, only music. Yet you dare to think you love me. (I can't bear to tell her she is only a figment) If I thought you knew anything of love I would've stayed. Yes, there beside you in that little house, in that little bed. Not just locked away inside that thick head.

Demetrios, Thank you for that comment. Such an odd word it is too. fig-ment /'figmnt/ noun a thing that someone believes to be real but that exists only in their imagination. Continued success and good health I wish for you friend. -Richard

This is an intriguingly romantic tale of a figment-sort of like being haunted by a dream. Excellent work! Evelyn

Evelyn, Thank you for that, it's exactly like being haunted ny a dream. Except the dream still hasn't died (though figuratively it has). The object of the dream remains. -Richard

PS meant for the recorded voice and the title suggests you listen to the poem. But I would rather hear fingernails on a chalkboard than my own voice. So you're missing nothing. And you're welcome. -Richard

Mystic Rose, You know how when you meet someone for the first time, and feel like you've known them your whole life? She surely exists, with a heartbeat as real as you and I. The idea of her, sound of her voice, caress of her skin, and smell of her hair. That's what became only a the figment, what I can't let go. -Richard

Interesting work. It reads like a person to get far away from and stay away. Thanks for the visit to my poem. Sara

Yes, when we love someone they never leave us but the memories can gradually fade away and become less and less. Always there will be something that will trigger a memory though. After my mother's death a really long time, a was shopping and the scent from soap made me weep. Sara

Sara, Thank you for the comment and for that practical advice. I am so very very far away from her. Many time zones and mountain ranges away. And yet she is still right here, inside me. Not by choice of either I'm sure. -Richard

This is very unusual. I really enjoyed reading it even if I still believe somehow she was not just a fig "newton" ment. (I tole that from Gershon!

We used to say humorously, 'back in the day,' -- 'Aw, she's just a 'fig newton' of your imagination... lol. Tender write, Richard. Great denouement! Happiness and Joy, Gershon
