Feel the Pull

in a valley, near the mountains
you survey your spread
at this moment in time
it's all in your head
but you still feel the pull
although the moon is not full

on a wooden floor
where the cowboys dance
a shadow falls
from your tall stance
but the reins are slipping
too loose in your hands

where is your horse?
the shadow asks
and you smile that smile
as you answer back
it's in my dreams
and you laugh that laugh

all these ideals
that play in your head
you figure it all out
from the books that you've read
the thought that it's not closer
fills you up with dread

you call on the moon
to tell you when
and the shadow is leaving
you've fenced him in
in the lunar light
it's fading, growing dim

hoof beats sounding
across the range
as you ride through the night
it all seems so strange
you've made it at last
ready for the change

you feel the pull
your heart secure
you feel the pull
