Notes About The Poem

Fb

(I wrote this and posted it on FaceBook, in response to someone saying that internet friends weren't "real" friends)

FaceBook is an "app" that's apt
To cheer me up oft times
With a wide array of people
From a wide array of climes

And while it sometimes frustrates
And tries my patience, too
It's brought to me a wealth of friends
Such priceless gifts, are YOU

Oh yes, I see the hateful memes
They anger me no end
But it's joy and love and kind support
That most good people send

So while I sometimes curse it
And contemplate farewell
The time I share with all of you
Is far too sweet ... to quell.

It's not just FB, it's the opinion of people about all sorts of online friendships. But I have no real life friends, only online friends, and they have made my life incredibly rich, and we share so much. My PoetrySoup and my FB friends are the most valuable friends ever. And one day I hope to meet them.

Well-said, Darren - I remember a few months ago somebody said on my FB page "Facebook/internet friends are not REAL friends!", and I heartily disagreed ... some of the dearest, most supportive friends I have in this world are people I met on the internet, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Friendship is not just confined to "in person" relationships, and it's based on conversation, interaction, kindness, interest, empathy, and many other things that don't require being WITH someone. I feel sorry for people who feel otherwise.

I needed that opinion of fb as I was dithering between the yin and the yang . Thanks for the articulation

It is indeed a two-edged sword, Jannie - I think we all find it such in one way or another.
