Familiar

Familiar
Like the voice I once knew
Like me and you
And everyone else
But her
Love
Is for both of us
And I can believe
Almost anyone
But her
Feelings
Like I once felt
For you no more
That you still feel for me
So why her?
I don’t understand
I can’t comprehend
Yell at me please
Whisper in my ear
Show me through your eyes
Why you love her
Why I can’t measure up
Come, take my hand
I’ll show you why,
Why you fell for me first
And not her

I like this. Usually I shy away from the confessional, but this allows the reader to move out of that sphere and give the poem their own meaning. Empathy is not a good response to a poem and I always think that it shows laziness on the part of the reader if empathy is the only approach. Loss and the questioning of it is a universal theme and the way that this poem is written helps the reader to seek out an understanding.
