False News- Story Poem

This past week my eyes shed tears
A friend, I thought had died
I've known him for so many years
For days I mourned and cried

Little did I know the fact
But false news had spread the word
Another friend was too quick to react
From something that he heard

He said- "Billy had a heart attack
And he cried- "He didn't survive"
But when I talked to his brother Jack
He said- "Billy is still- ((ALIVE))"

Billy his brother is alive and well
In fact, he wasn't ill at all
It was another person with the same name who fell
And who unfortunately took the fall

So, the story goes... Twice this past week I thought I lost two friends. Both long time childhood friends. The first was my friend Billy, someone spread the word on FaceBook that he had died from a heart attack, unfortunately, it was someone else with the same name. Turned out it was a 93-year-old man who lived a long, beautiful life. The second was a classmate that someone said to me recently at my HS reunion, that our classmate passed 2 years ago. Turned out...she is still alive too! False news spreads quickly...thank goodness it turned out to be a happy ending in both cases. :) An emotional ride for sure.

Always feels like a double edged sword when your ‘good luck’ is someone else’s misfortune. Alas… it’s the way of the world. Enjoy your good fortune (and your win). Terry

Congratulations on your win. A wonderful story/write. Thanks for the note at the end. False news spreads quickly like a wild fire. Guess that is why one needs to only say good things. Glad your friends are OK. Have a great day....................

Charlie so glad it was a happy ending. It would be nice to get their facts right. They caused a lot of grief with the misinformation. Glad it was a happy ending Charlie...

Charlie, your emotions are well expressed in your poem, so glad both of your friends are still alive, and it wasn't true, what an emotional roller coaster.

Oh my goodness! I verify these things! I had a friend die in May and didn’t find out until June when a mutual friend (I don’t know very well) posted on FB. He sent me his number and I called and got the full report. Hugs to you…indeed an emotional roller coaster. We don’t want to believe someone has died nor hear of someone’s mistaken demise. Great poem!
