Expectation Denied

Some say: Never had, never missed; How hollow that feels in the harshest light Of the loss of the brow that was never kissed, Of the dream that retreated into the night. The memories of expectation, taken away, Are as piercing as having, then having none; The forces of kismet so cruelly at play Denied us our future, beloved son. Though time may heal through thick and thin, The world might relinquish, turn kinder than tough, For now there's no answer, no place to begin And whatever transpires is never enough. So we hold to each other, the truth in it all, The tears will cease, then torrent - revived; And the truth we will tell is the truth we recall: We loved you as much as if you had survived.
