Every Grain of Sand

Prophetic waters rake the shore,
a liquid landscape hard to seize;
against the waves an abstract war
that steals away my memories.
And time can’t heal the vast erosion,
it carries grains of life away,
not even sacred, strong devotion
can grasp the grains of yesterday
and pull them back to desperate breast,
back to the coast of motherhood;
instead they’re drawn to sea-spawned quests;
my hopes and dreams on drifting wood.

With every grain of sand abducted
and washed by spills from future moons
is but another moment that’s obstructed
entombed ‘neath life’s collected runes.
And every grain of sand I miss,
each one the tides of time have stole,
each one diminishes life into a damp abyss
where island hearts can’t be consoled.
