Notes About The Poem

For those who have no idea what a Javelina is, it is spelled correctly, Google it.

Evening Walk

Evening Walk
Kevin Davis (2025)

My favorite evening show concludes at half- passed eight,
It’s time for me and the dogs to take our final stroll.
The summer’s heat, the desert air, now abates—
Night cools the ground, though still the season holds.

We roam through our street where lights are rarely seen,
Ordinances dim the dark beneath a sky of endless light.
Our steps align with constellations’ steady gleam,
My brood unfazed by sounds or shifting shapes of night.

Our walk skirts a wide wash, where cactus and mesquite abound.
Desert life stirs softly familiar on our nightly rounds.
Birds chirp, insects hum—such music we’ve often found,
But tonight begins differently, with an owl’s eerie sound.

“Don’t tarry—turn back!” the voice inside me pleads,
But habit wins, as boldness always leads.
Coyotes howl, a lone bird cries at the moon,
We near the walk’s apex, beneath a Sonoran oak’s gloom.

From under the shadow, a snarl tears through the dark—
My dogs bolt free, I stumble, struck by shock.
I search the void to see what I’ve disturbed,
Out bursts a javelina—tusks flashing, fierce and firm.

My dogs flee home, while I face the charging boar,
With running shoes as shields, I kick and roar.
It bites, then turns, leaving my shoe in tatters more,
Me scratched but standing—its fury no more.

I dust myself off and hurry home, my pulse still loud,
My dogs await, tails wagging, safe and proud.
They drink their fill, then rest without a sound—
And I, still smiling, thank the desert ground.
