Escape
A single red rose
I gave to you
Down on one knee I propose
It was then you said you had been untrue
Better now than later I suppose.
Tears flowed down my cheek
That cannot be denied
I gulped and swallowed but couldn't speak
No matter how hard I tried .
I had only myself to blame you said
If I hadn't worked that night you wouldn't have gone out
But the nagging thought wouldn't leave my head
That's what trust should be about .
So I put away my diamond ring
I said goodbye and wished you well
I don't know what the future will bring
But with you it would have been hell.
I watched as you married a friend of mine
I witnessed your lives taking shape
Now I give thanks to the good lord divine
Because I had a lucky escape.
