Notes About The Poem

Rhyme scheme: AB aAab AB and all lines are in iambic tetrameter.

An effective conventional triolet achieves two things: firstly, the naturalness of the refrain; and secondly, the alteration of the refrain’s meaning in relation to the other lines in the verse.

Bird-of-Paradise, by Suzette Richards – image generated 16/9/2024

Enchanted

A Bird-of-Paradise displays
and dances into naïve heart.
Its plumage dazzles, bright arrays—
a Bird-of-Paradise displays.
The spell seduces, now betrays;
desire and danger play their part.
A Bird-of-Paradise displays
and dances into naïve heart.

Sure sounds nice. I guess it's the combo of rhyme scheme, alliteration, and word choice.

Excellent Triolet, Su. So clever how you’ve used material beauty as an insertion into the pure Heart. This poem very effectively articulates that form & spirit is the same thing ~ there is no difference except in the mental realm on dense dimensions. The Bird of Paradise both inserts & betrays, though it HAS to do this, to transmute Heart from naïveté into open awareness ( this according to the narrow interpretation of naïveté) The alteration of meaning is subtle, yet powerful. The poet’s growing consciousness in seeing desire & danger as actors with a role to play in human evolution is evident. The concise concrete yet colourful depiction of title gives “enchanted” a deeper meaning. Poem is crisp, yet flowing with a slightly elusive quality. Excellent title for poem content. I’m faving. Have a happy Youth Day, Su. I’m glad I opened Soup, after being conquered by June 16 shooting images, to be gifted with this Word Art. You made my day. Xx.

Hi Ghairo. Thank you for your in-depth appraisal of my poem. Yes, the pain that gave rise to Youth Day, is never far from our minds. Poetry has always served as balm for my troubled soul. Blessings, Su
