Empty Shoebox

The shoebox lay in antic muddle,
gathered the dust of antiquity.
When time came to clear the clutter
I held awhile the frail cardboard carton,
found inside emptiness with memory specks,
heard the echo of faded footsteps,
felt the pulse of the distant life
I had since walked away from.

I like your vivid free style! These few lines say so much about what small dusty things can tie us back to our past.

It can be strange to go through the proverbial shoebox after so many years. When it was still recent pass, no big deal, but we do change in our sixties!
