Empathy
Empathy
Is it a perfect drug?
Perfect lies under the rug
Perfect ties severed in media mud
Unreducible urge to recombine
Two eternal lights intertwine
Empathy — our stars collide
In the vast empty skies we rise
Floating apart, returning together
Through storms, through fire, through forever
Empathy — our vow survives
Through the cracks, the tree’s alive
Nebula of tiny beginnings
Stretching like newborns, wobbling through living
We cry out when we are hurt
But still we find our way back to birth
Two archers, arrows in flight
Fighting storms in solar light
Empathy — our stars collide
In the vast empty skies we rise
Floating apart, returning together
Through storms, through fire, through forever
Empathy — our vow survives
Through the cracks, the tree’s alive
Are my eyes just for you?
I would rather burn than stare untrue
Solitary soldier at the gates
Defying prophets, defying fate
Imprison me in barbed wire chains
I’ll crawl from graves, I’ll break the pain
Empathy — our stars collide
In the vast empty skies we rise
Floating apart, returning together
Through storms, through fire, through forever
Empathy — our vow survives
Through the cracks, the tree’s alive
I left my post, I let them in
Enemies tearing limb from limb
But grace forgives, love resurrects
Broken by time, not by defect
The wars we fought, the blood we gave
Still the spruce grows strong, unafraid
Empathy — our stars collide
Through the battles, through the tide
Floating apart, returning together
Through storms, through fire, through forever
Empathy — our vow survives
Through the cracks, the tree’s alive
We are the tree — growing in concrete
Empathy, our endless heartbeat
