Ego

Ego
If I could buy a compliment
One for each awkward day
No matter what the price would be
I’d buy them anyway
Not to inflate my ego
Also not to feed my pride
There’s something I can’t overcome
Believe me, I have tried
You think that I am self-assured
My confidence is showing
Well if that’s the way I am perceived
I can’t blame you for not knowing
You don’t know of my inner fears
The doubt and indecision
I understand it’s not your fault
I did not give permission
I wanted everyone’s respect
That was something I held dear
But now I see that what they have
Is actually more like fear
And that is not a compliment
For it keeps me isolated
I see no benefit in this
I’m much too overrated
So now my desperation shows
But Pride will not make way
For Humility to take its place
It refuses to obey
As I quietly suffer with elegant poise
My heart is sad and hollow
Common sense is pleading for the lead
But I don’t know how to follow.
