Early Morning Surfers
Along the beach the youthful surfers gather
To survey the breakers pounding the coral reef
In the late morning hours before the crowds arrive.
Then one by one, board under arm, they arrive
At the sea’s edge, wade in, and quickly gather
Near the jagged line formed by the coral reef.
Once the surfers are beyond the coral reef
They anxiously await the largest wave to arrive
Paddling hard they ride; on the shore they gather.
Again, they arrive and gather, facing the reef.
