Early Morning Surfers

Along the beach the youthful surfers gather
To survey the breakers pounding the coral reef
In the late morning hours before the crowds arrive.

Then one by one, board under arm, they arrive
At the sea’s edge, wade in, and quickly gather
Near the jagged line formed by the coral reef.

Once the surfers are beyond the coral reef
They anxiously await the largest wave to arrive
Paddling hard they ride; on the shore they gather.

Again, they arrive and gather, facing the reef.

I tried it only once, off Waikiki Beach, when I was in Hawaii. I wasn't good at it, but the waves weren't that great either. I never ever lived close enough to the beach to keep up with it. It is a very difficult sport!

Have never surfed but water skied in Mauritius a long time ago, You created a wonderful scene, surfers waiting for the big one. Enjoy your weekend Milton. Tom

Thanks, Tom. I have surfed only once, off the shore of Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. I wasn't good at it, so I quickly gave it up. I have water skied on a lake...very enjoyable. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

Hello Milton … not being a surfer myself, I can never work out why surfers wear black wetsuits, the same colour as seals, the favoured meal of sharks. Sounds like a fun sport early in the morning though Milton - Lindsay

Black wetsuits against a whitewater background keep camera designers employed. Aloha! Rico

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Lindsay. I am not a surfer, so this was a fictional write. I have, however, observed the surfers gathering on the beach and surveying the incoming breakers.
