Notes About The Poem

4/23/2026 for A Mother Figure - Picture Prompt Poetry Contest sponsored by Suzette Richards

Dream Mother

Your poor mother left earth when you were small.
She's like a fairy godmother from a star.
Her true essence visits, though you can't recall
her earthly form, out of reach and so far.

Yet, if she's a fairy, she isn't real -
maybe she didn't die but left you instead.
So, you avoid the sadness that you might feel,
but for the false mother who lives in your head.

True of family that leaves early. you don’t know who they would’ve been, so you carry a fantasy around in your head. … Yet, if she's a fairy, she isn't real - maybe she didn't die but left you instead...a sinister thought, but you write in a real and raw way. Congrats!

Thanks, Gershon? I think there's a decent idea behind it, but I have reservations about the way I executed it. Maybe, I'll sleep on it and come back to it...or...I'll get lazy and dash out another piece of...poetry. I think the meter is off. uhoh, I'm on an overthinking binge.
