Double Identity

Created with a single identity My dignity, honour depends on that identity Identity handed to me by Divinity As Divinity did throughout humanity Black is my originality, I seek not to lose it Yet this double identity is forced on me Ah my identity with white has been dotted My culture, religion, tradition all stripped off me The stripes all over me is the limitation The white patches destroy my black orientation Left me in an unfavourable, endless competition Presumed me less a human because of my complexion Now I want my blackness back, no more this mixture Like a free bird I want to leap and fly up in the sky To announce my freedom to the generations unborn Only when the weight of this double identity is lifted
