Don'T Worry About Me Falling

His training wheels became more of a burden
So as he helped me take them off
He handed me the wrench that I'd need
We both smiled but we didn't talk

I reflected on times that felt like just yesterday
Yet somehow they seemed long ago
Before he could walk and before he could talk
It almost seemed as if he'd never grow

As he took off so wobbly I cringed a bit
Then came the rock his front tire hit
He fell off of his bike and skinned up his knee
Holding back all his tears he said to me

Don't worry about me falling
I'm tough just like your are dad
Maybe we need to keep my training wheels on
I told him not to give up so fast

I'm so proud of you son and I want you to know
I'll protect you whenever I can
I could see his pride hurt so I assured him
You can do it my little man

Now the years pass by quickly and my little man
Is talking a bit deeper now
His attentions have turned from playing with me
And he thinks he has all the know how

His first taste of love soon came calling
They were inseparable in all ways
But I knew that his heart would probably break
It's a lesson that we all have to take

Don't worry about me falling
I know what love's all about
Dad, you may not believe, but she really loves me
She's like an Angel that fell from a cloud

Well heartache came calling soon after prom
My son had to hear those 2 words
So I just sat back and hurt while he cried
Reminding him first loves are always the worst

I know there must be more fish in the sea
But my heart is hurting right now
I told him it will take time, but you'll be just fine
Someday you'll move on somehow

Now many years passed and he found his true love
His mother and I live alone
Without him we found that it's just a house
Cause with him we made it a home

Years of working and living harder than I
Probably should have lived
Have taken its toll and I have become
Somewhat feeble and frail

As he paid me a visit we had a talk
I told him son there would soon come a day
When I would be called to head on back home
I fell as I walked away

He reached out his arm and he cushioned my fall
It's funny how fast time can change
I looked up at him and gave him a thanks
I just smiled as I walked away

And said don't worry about me falling
Son I'm tough just like you
No matter how soon I leave from this earth
Know that I'll always love you

So don't worry about me falling

7/7 This poem is amazing. As a 16 year old girl, this poem taught me to look for the small moments becuase they will pass you by otherwise. They way you expressed not only the feeings of a mother but also the struggle of having to watch him learn pain on his own, is amazing. Thank you for writing this, it helped me see throught my mom's eyes alittle. ~Thank you

Elissa, that's probably the nicest review I've ever received. Thank you! I'm in my 40's and I am glad that you can enjoy it for what it is. And for what it's worth I can remember 16 like yesterday, so yes, live those moments because in the blink of an eye you will be older. Thanks so much!!
