Dog Days
(Jake Jake, 2022)
Dog Days
I dreamt of dogs last night
And maybe it was just a symbolic
Representation of the end of August
Week of hundred degree days to come,
But I think it was more a clear and literal
Representation that I like dogs
And care that they like me
More than I care what their humans
Think of me.
And I wonder why this is.
My wife says it’s because I’m a dog person
But the question then is why is that?
So I look to my dogs
And see how honest and direct they all are.
They aren’t necessarily good
In and of themselves, because that’s our definition,
But they are certainly themselves
Which is actually more than can be said
About most people.
And why is that?
Because we compare ourselves to each other
And all the characters we see in movies,
Advertisements, music videos and commercials
Whether they are real or not
Augmented or not
Computer generated or not
And in the comparing we sometimes
So easily lose touch with who we are
And what we want.
Dogs don’t have this problem,
At least those who haven’t lived too long
With those kinds of humans.
And real dogs seem to recognize real humans
At least that’s what we tell ourselves
Unconsciously as we touch noses
And wag our tails.
